For eight-year-old Nathan, a proper wish has to float. Or fly. Or better yet, both. So when he got to choose his wish, he decided to visit the US Navy fleet at Naval Station Norfolk, in Virginia.
His wish trip included tours of aircrafts and ships and he even toured a state-of-the art guided missile destroyer. In addition, he got to celebrate his 9th birthday on one of the ships, and got to fly in a WWII training plane!
Nathan was treated as a “shipmate” by the Navy crews. He received his own flight jacket covered with official patches from various units. He spent time with a helicopter crew, was saluted by a line of sailors as he was “piped aboard” to the sound of a bosun’s whistle. He even received a special plaque marking his birthday celebration on the USS Kearsarge.
Nathan’s trip to the Navy fleet was one his mom said that he’ll never forget. “It’s really solidified his desire to be a Navy pilot someday,” she said.
