For eight-year-old Gabriel, nothing was more exciting than to be a firefighter. The helmets, the gear, and the trucks all seem larger than life. Gabriel saw his wish come true when firefighters of Albany Engine 1 Company’s C shift paid him a visit.
With the help of the Mayor, the Albany Fire Department, St. Margaret’s Center, and Make-A-Wish® volunteer wish granters, it was a very special day for Gabriel.
Though in a wheelchair and using a ventilator to assist his breathing, Gabriel met the firefighters, received a plaque and honorary firefighter certificate, then got to ride in the truck, activated the lights and siren, and even got to spray a fire hose!
The firefighters made Gabriel one of their own, with his banner on the truck, a special platform for his wheelchair, and a fire helmet with his name. The day that Gabriel will never forget wrapped up with a reception for family, nursing care staff, and “his firefighters,” complete with a fire truck cake!
Back at the firehouse, Gabriel’s photo is featured – just one of the team…
