As an eighth grader, Davia led her Schalmont girls’ soccer team to an undefeated season and a Class B state championship. During the off-season she started feeling back pain, before getting a startling diagnosis: Cancer.
“It wasn’t something I was expecting them to say,” she said at the time. “But they said it. Now I have to deal with it.”
So she did. One way the 16-year-old dealt was going on her Make-A-Wish Northeast New York wish to Aruba with her family, thanks to help from Wish Granter Gina Wright.
“I took my time with my wish [decision]. I didn’t rush into anything,” Davia said. “I took in the input from other people.”
Davia returned to the soccer field her sophomore year, and scored the game-winning goal in the Section II final. “It’s everything I’ve wanted, everything I’ve wanted to work for — and now I’ve got it,” she said.
In other words, she dealt with it.
